Welcome to Musical Theatre Society

Are you interested in joining LUU Musical Theatre Society? Here is everything you need to know!

ABOUT US

We are focused on producing high-quality shows, with a particular focus on strong singing and acting. Due to this, we are an auditioned society. However, once you successfully get into a show you are then automatically a member for the whole year and are welcome to join all socials as part of the MT family. We also offer specific support and advice in-person and on our socials around handling auditions so you don’t have to worry about what to expect!

We rehearse up to 3 times a week. In the first term, we put on two shows (one in the Riley Smith Theatre, and the other in Pyramid Theatre.) These run alongside each other so it is not possible to be in both. After this, there is then one show in both Term 2 and Term 3. All of these involve two mid-week rehearsals and one weekend rehearsal - though specific days and time required in each session will differ part to part, and show to show.

If you would like to appear in even more shows every year then it is possible to be part of more than one performance society at Leeds. If you’d like to find out specific rehearsal days then don’t hesitate to contact us!

However, we do offer the most stage-time of all the societies at Leeds! There are up to seven opportunities a year to be involved in MT shows, and these are not limited to simply performing in them; you can be part of creating original work, directing, producing or musically directing. We actively encourage members to broaden their horizons and try different areas of Musical Theatre, and support them in taking up new challenges. There are also opportunities to join our committee and hone various other skills that way!

Musical Theatre Society has put on incredible shows including Into the Woods, 9 to 5, Company, Rent, Sweeney Todd, Carrie, Spring Awakening, The Last Five Years and Addams Family.

Our upcoming Term 1 shows are ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet', which is a jukebox musical often billed as “Shakespeare's forgotten rock and roll masterpiece”, and ‘Bonnie & Clyde,’ a musical centred around 1930s outlaws, Bonnie & Clyde, featuring a “non-traditional score, combining rockabilly, blues and gospel music”. We always offer a range of shows to audition for so there’s something for everyone; opportunities to learn new skills, laugh, cry, to sing lush harmonies or feel-good tunes.

There are also opportunities to get involved for non-performing Musical Theatre fans! We release application forms regularly to get involved with the production side of Musical Theatre. There are also opportunities for instrumentalists, with all of our productions being accompanied by a live orchestra and the regular use of a rehearsal pianist throughout the rehearsal process.

There is also the chance to go to THE EDINBURGH FRINGE FESTIVAL! Every year we take an original show to the Fringe, an opportunity which is supported by but not limited to Musical Theatre members. These have included shows such as “Liz: The Musical”, “The Girls of St. Trinians” and “A Wilde Life.” Members can get involved in writing, performing, directing or producing this work and it’s a great way to expand your experience as a professional, creative individual!

OUR ETHOS

At heart, we are a fun-loving and hard-working society who take pride in the shows they produce. We are one big family, supportive of each others’ achievements and we love inviting new people into our mix!

We are an incredibly inclusive society, and ensure rehearsals are a safe space for every race, ethnicity, sexuality and gender expression. We offer support and advice through our Welfare Reps (and just about everyone in the society - we’re a lovely bunch) and are always looking for new ways to empower members to be exactly who they are.

OUR SOCIALS

We offer a wide range of socials for our members, including welfare hour and other non-drinking socials such as picnics, pizza nights and day trips to things like shows or Alton Towers. We also run socials specifically aimed at welcoming MT freshers of all years to help people get to know each other and find their feet within the society.

A lot of us like to work-hard and play-hard so we also do Otley Runs, Drag Brunches and nights out at Fruity.

This means that whether you’re involved in shows or not, there is still so much fun to be had within the society, ways to meet new people and laugh with your friends.

There’s something for everyone in Musical Theatre Society, so make sure you don’t miss out!
