Welcome to Mountaineering (Climbing)

Whether you’re a seasoned alpinist or rock novice, the Mountaineering and Climbing Club welcomes anyone with a sense of adventure and love for the mountains.

We are boulderers, cragrats, Scottish-winter veterans, ridge scramblers and summiteers united by our passion for rock, affinity for adventure and mega psyche! We train weekly at the excellent indoor climbing centres in Leeds and at weekends venture around Yorkshire and abroad for our fix of cragging. Check out our Facebook page and Instagram to get involved with our latest epic!

Socials and events

Nothing is more deserved than a pint after a hard training session. Every Wednesday we head to the Packhorse pub for 9pm. Its whereabouts can be found on our Facebook page, or just follow the hoard after Depot training.

As climbers we know how to have a good time. We have many socials throughout the year such as house parties, Otley runs, our legendary ceilidh dance and annual dinner. Tickets are advertised on our Facebook page and are sold through the LUU website.

Trips

This is the biggie! Trips to outdoor and indoor climbing venues around Yorkshire and further afield are a great opportunity to send new routes and put your strength to the test on real rock! Think you can boulder V5? But what have you climbed on grit?

Our single day weekend trips to local crags such as Almscliffe and Caley are a great introduction to the coveted art of Traditional Climbing. When we talk about nuts, racks and cracks we’re not joking!

We run epic weekend trips throughout the year including ventures to the Lake District, Peaks, North Wales and even the Scottish Highlands for winter mountaineering. Hard climbing in the day is followed by hard partying at night!

Gear

An amazing benefit of LUUMC club membership is use of club gear. Be it a rope for lead climbing; a full trad rack of nuts and cams for a day on the grit, or ice axes and crampons for a weekend of Scottish-winter.

Details of how to borrow gear are on our Instagram and Facebook page, or contact committee.

Full kit-lists for our various trips are on our socials. Some items of kit are essential and can’t be borrowed from the club, such as B2 rated boots for winter mountaineering, so make sure you read up.

Charity

A big focus of the club is supporting local and nationwide charities that are involved in climbing and mountaineering. This year charities we hope to support are Climbing Alongside Mental-Health and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

British Mountaineering Council

The LUUMC is a British Mountaineering Council (BMC) affiliated club. This means that with your membership you get world-wide liability insurance (whilst on club trips), and we as a club get exclusive access to BMC huts, training and discounts!

For more information about the insurance included with your membership please contact us.
