Welcome to The Social Mobility Society (SoMoSoc)

We welcome anyone who feels that artificial barriers are preventing them from achieving their potential, whether you’re a commuter, have caring responsibilities, are the first in your family to go to university or a range of other reasons, you’ll find a community at SoMoSoc. We also warmly encourage involvement from students who may not identify as less advantaged but care about furthering the cause of social mobility. This social mobility society welcomes anyone and everyone at the University, irrespective of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion or class. We are here to support you in your career progression, settling into university and creating a safe comfortable space with students with similar upbringings to you!

We offer a range of personal and professional development events to ensure students in our community succeed in their professional life beyond any barriers they may face. Keep an eye out for our no-dress code, free events focusing on anything from using LinkedIn, demystifying networking and anything else our members think would be useful. We also hold sessions to work on self-confidence, feelings of ‘imposter syndrome’ or not feeling ‘good enough here in a university setting to ensure you know your mental health matters.

We host a range of socials and create space for students from similar backgrounds to connect and make friends – these include bowling events, casual chats, dinners and anything geared towards the interests of our members.
